Maria Berrio

New York, USA

MARIA BERRIO (b. 1982, Bogotá, Colombia)

Lives and works in New York.

Maria Berrio’s large collages, the result of a painstaking selection of paper from various sources, explore a whole range of colours and textures. Inspired by South American mythology and folklore, as well as by her own biography, Berrio’s works create surrealist narratives. Her collages portray mostly female figures, which the artist describes as ‘strong, vulnerable and brave women in harmony with themselves and nature’.

The Colombian artist holds a BA in Visual Arts by the Parsons School of Design and an MA by the School of Visual Arts, New York.

Her solo exhibitions include: In a time of draught, Praxis International Gallery, New York (2017); The Harmony of the Spheres, Praxis International Gallery, New York (2015), and Dream Gardens, Praxis International Gallery, New York (2013). Her participations in group exhibitions include: People Get Ready, Nasher Museum of Art, Durham (2018); Art on Paper 2017 Biennial, Weatherspoon Museum, Greensboro (2017); Arachnes Wolf, Livtak Contemporary, Tel- Aviv (2016); CUT N MIX, El Museo del Barrio, New York (2015), and Carpe Diem: A Latin American Art Exhibition, Philadelphia City Hall, Philadelphia (2012).
